New Delhi: After weeks of tension, the Congress on Friday finally declared its delegate candidates. Amethi and Ray Barelli Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh.
Rahul Gandhi Rae Bareli has competed and Kishori Lal Sharma will contest from Amethi.
The Congress, which is contesting for 17 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh as part of a seat-sharing deal with the Samajwadi Party (SP), has announced candidates for all seats except Amethi and Rae Bareli.

Rae Bareli is also a bastion of Parliament. She served from 1967 to 1977, when former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi held her seat, and from 2004 until 2024, when she was appointed as a member of the Rajya Sabha. Sonia Gandhi.
Rahul is expected to file his nomination from the constituency on Friday. He will be taking on BJP legislator Dinesh Pratap Singh. He was fielded by the party from his seat in 019 too.
Singh lost to Sonia by a margin of 1.67 lakh votes.
Singh, who was again selected for the battle of Rae Bareli, said: “I assure the nation that the farewell of the ‘nakli’ Gandhis of Rae Bareli is certain. It is certain that the ‘lotus’ of the BJP will bloom, and the Congress is certain to lose. Priyanka Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi are not important to me because I even fought with four-term parliamentarian Sonia Gandhi. If Gandhi comes to Rae Bareli, they will be defeated.”
Cutting due near deadline
The announcement came on the last day of candidate registration for the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha elections. Both districts go to the polls on May 20.
Rahul’s loss to Irani in the 2019 polls in Amethi, once considered a ‘pocket borough’ of the Congress, was seen as a serious blow to the party’s national standing. Iran won the seat by about 55,000 votes.
Rahul represented Amethi in the Lok Sabha from 2004 to 2019. His father and former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was also elected as Amethi member of the House of Representatives from 1981 until his death in 1991. Sonia Gandhi contested her election from here in 1999. Passing the baton to Rahul in 2004.
Rahul currently represents Wayanad in the Lok Sabha while Irani is bidding for a new term in Amethi.
