Okay, you can tell just by looking at the name. road or abandoned There’s no big, slick marketing team behind it. Who changes the name of a podcast between seasons and then, in the most shockingly confusing move, starts calling the first season a “prequel” to the second season? Well, J. Barton Mitchell would appear to be the polymath behind this amazing piece of audio science fiction. He somehow manages to write, produce and direct. and Edit all episodes.
But no matter which season you listen to, there’s no way to know that it’s not coming from a huge production company. This is a sonic masterpiece with an expansive story told purely through incredible sound design, whether at the bottom of the ocean or in the middle of space.
roadis not a “prequel”, it’s just the first season (I was so confused when I was trying to figure out how to start listening to this show, so trust me, start here). This is the story of a team of scientists and engineers. It is located in a massive underwater laboratory built next to a vast and inexplicable artifact colloquially known as the Vault. Humanity is spread across the galaxy, but this entire season is set entirely on Earth, at the bottom of the ocean.
The bolt is bizarreAnd the voice of Dr. Eva Graf (Elizabeth Laidlaw), who leads the research team, is heard. whisper. But no one has figured out how to open the vault yet, and Maas-Dorian, the private company funding the whole effort, is about to pull the plug. That’s about when an awful lot of things start to go very, very wrong.
good night solar powermany road It’s about the relationships between various characters and a sentient AI in a closed environment. It’s also about an endless series of incredible disasters, as a huge cast and crew face escalating danger, gruesome deaths, and even giant spider-like war robots of their own creation. And, more personally, it is a program about the confusion and permanence of loss experienced as a parent.
The show in season 2 is currently abandoned— Jump from beneath the sea to the far reaches of space, using a nearly new core cast on a mission to recover a massive, massive vessel for the Maas-Dorian that was mysteriously abandoned during the mission. As you can imagine, this is all about learning the hard way what’s behind it all, and it moves very quickly. See, it’s almost impossible to explain the actual plot. abandoned without giving up much road.
It’s safe to vaguely say that this is once again a story about the relationship between humans and AI, as well as character arcs due to the impact of parenting. The two seasons may sound different, but they are connected in such a fantastic way that it’s hard to explain. But what unites them is the sound design.
I can’t celebrate it enough. Some episodes have minutes at a time that are just soundscapes, incredible auditory storytelling of catastrophic disasters, entire buildings or spaceships collapsing around characters, terrifying enemies flying or crashing.
