Announcing the deal on Saturday “worth £600m to the British economy over the next five years”, Reeves said a healthy relationship with China was “purely in our national interest”.
During a visit to British bicycle manufacturer Brompton’s Beijing store, Reeves insisted he would not change his economic plans.
“Our fiscal rules are non-negotiable and we have been really clear that we will pay our day-to-day spending through tax receipts and reduce debt as a share of GDP,” she said. “The budget I set in October is non-negotiable and we will take action to ensure we meet these fiscal rules.”
“I believe that increasing trade and investment with economically important partners like China is critical to achieving economic growth, which is a top priority within my government,” Reeves said during a news conference with Chinese Vice Premier Heifeng.
