Dinesh Karthik praised SA20 as the second best league after IPL. Dinesh Karthik, representing Paarl Royals, created history by becoming the first Indian cricketer to play in the SA20 league. The wicketkeeper-batsman made his debut against Sunrisers Eastern Cape at Boland Park on Saturday, a moment he described as a proud milestone.
Karthik, who is currently a part of the Royals squad in the third edition of SA20, spoke about the growing stature of the league and why he decided to join the tournament.
“Second best T20 league after IPL”
In an on-field chat with commentators, Karthik explained why he chose to play in South Africa’s premier T20 league.
“I wanted to play here because the competition is tough and it is right next to the IPL in terms of quality,” Karthik said while keeping wicket for Paarl Royals.
The 37-year-old, who has played in various T20 leagues around the world, sees SA20 as his best competition. “The quality of cricket here is amazing and the fans create a fantastic atmosphere,” he added.
Historic moments in Indian cricket
Karthik’s participation is a significant moment in SA20 history. Despite the league being partially funded by IPL franchises, no Indian cricketer has played in SA20 so far.
“I am very proud to be the first Indian cricketer to play in this league,” Karthik told SportsBoom.com. “I have always wanted to play in a league outside India and I believe I have chosen the best league. Pink Army welcomed me warmly, and it has been a fantastic experience so far.”
Increased interest in SA20
Karthik believes that more Indian players can follow in his footsteps. As the league gains traction back home, he sees it as a valuable opportunity for cricketers once their IPL commitments are over.
“Why not? Anyone who has completed the IPL can watch SA20. It is the toughest competition against the best players. Playing in front of passionate crowds gives you the best results,” Karthik said.
SA20 is already gaining popularity in India, with matches being broadcast across major channels. He added, “Awareness is growing and the league is getting stronger every season.”
