Joe Cole still has many good friends within Chelsea and he remains heavily involved with the club.
So it’s always interesting when he says this. Cole said Chelsea were prioritizing defense this transfer window, co-signed the signing of Marc Guehi and was full of praise for the England international.
But he couldn’t help but make a cheeky comment about Chelsea along the way!
“The number one priority for Chelsea is central defence,” Cole was quoted as saying by DAZN. “Benoît Badiashile is injured and Wesley Fofana has been good but continues to fall apart. Levi Colwill is a young player who has done well, but he still needs to improve and will do so.
“It’s really disappointing because Chelsea sold a player like Marc Guehi and he was (at the time) the best centre-back I could ever see.
“Gehi is a suitable player, he is currently in the starting XI for England and Chelsea will have to fork out to bring him back. This is something Chelsea needs to sort out.
“Some players, such as Axel Disasi, have not settled in as well as the club would have liked. I like the link with Marc Guehi, but it’s disappointing that they have to buy the player they sold. Chelsea does that way too often!
“If you need to, and if it’s the right move, you should do it. I don’t think there’s a better centre-back in this country outside of Manchester City and Arsenal. He’s as good as any of them and he will do that.” Get better.”
Cole was full of praise, and he also pointed out the need to bring back academy players!
I like Guehi. He is a very solid defender, very composed, has leadership skills, has very good ball control and defensive ability. I am not opposed to signing him. I don’t think he ticks all the boxes we need. Ideally I want a centre-back who is confident (in the air and on the ground), decisive, organized, vocal, dominant and aggressive. And I truly think that’s what we’re missing in that space. As I said earlier this week, he might not be my first choice, and maybe not even my second or third choice.
But I admire what Cole says here, and he’s not exactly wrong about Guehi either. Top, top player.
