Vice President-elect Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) announced Thursday that he will resign from his Senate seat effective early Friday.
Vance sent a letter of resignation to Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine on Thursday as he prepares for the next four years in the White House.
“I would like to express that it has been a tremendous honor and privilege to serve the people of Ohio in the Senate for the past two years as I prepare to serve as Vice President of the United States,” Vance wrote. Letter to DeWine.
DeWine will appoint a replacement for Vance, who served only two years of his six-year Senate term. The appointed senator will fill Vance’s seat until a special election is held in 2026. Another election will then be held in 2028.
Vance issued a separate statement Thursday, thanking Ohioans for “the privilege of representing you in the United States Senate.”
“When I was elected to this position, I promised I would never forget where I came from, and I live that promise every day,” he continued.
“The American people have given President Trump an undeniable mandate to put America first, at home and abroad. Over the next four years, I will do my best to help President Trump enact his agenda. “Together, we will make America stronger, safer, and more prosperous than ever before.”
Vance and President-elect Trump are scheduled to take office on January 20, 2025.
