Everton defender Ashley Young says it will be the pinnacle of his career when he plays his 18-year-old son Tyler in the Merseyside club’s FA Cup third round tie with Peterborough United later on Thursday.
The 39-year-old former England international spent more than eight years at Manchester United, winning the Premier League title in 2012-13, the FA Cup in 2015-16 and both the League Cup and Europa League in 2016-17.
His son appeared once for Peterborough.
“If there was a chance we could play together or play against each other, it would be the best of everything I’ve done in my career,” Ashley told Everton’s website.
“Hopefully we can be on the same field on game day. I’ve been saying this since the draw came out: It’s going to be a goosebumps moment for me. I have to say it’s going to be a huge moment for me, and for Tyler as well.
“He is just starting his career so it will be fantastic to be able to showcase his talents in a fantastic stadium in front of a sell-out crowd – the biggest fans he has ever played in front of.”
Tyler says he won’t take it easy on his father if they fight against each other.
“I wouldn’t even think he was my father,” he said. “He’s just another opponent I can beat.”
