Ohio Governor Mike DeWine signed legislation strengthening parents’ rights to know when schools are making changes to their children’s health care or arranging classes related to sex, sexual orientation or gender.
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine signed a bill Wednesday that strengthens parents’ rights to know when schools are making changes to their children’s health care or preparing lessons involving “sexual content.” Conservatives across the country are increasingly criticizing public schools for being too liberal on these issues.
Parents can refuse health care or classes under the “Parental Bill of Rights.”
A separate provision in the Republican-backed bill would require school districts to allow students to leave school during the day during religious instruction periods.
The signing comes as conservatives across the country increasingly criticize public schools as too liberal and seek to stifle discussion of hot topics, especially those related to gender identity.
Opponents accused the Ohio bill of forcing schools to disclose personal health care discussions to LGBTQ+ students with their parents.
