After recently launching the new Phantom 4 Pro and the massive Inspire 2, DJI has also released a new mobile app. This is DJI Go 4. This app is not an update to the existing DJI Go app and will continue to require updates. The app is for Mavic Pro, Phantom 4 Pro, and Inspire 2 owners who have an existing Phantom drone.
The new app also supports Phantom 4, but we’ve yet to hear any explanation from DJI as to why there are two versions of the mobile app floating around.
Take a closer look. DJI Go 4 is almost a clone of the existing DJI Go app for Android and iOS. The updated artwork is a welcome start, but at first glance the functionality remains largely the same. Beyond the homepage and default settings, this is where the magic happens, with new and improved features to help you get the most out of your drone.
The main features DJI is highlighting with the new DJI Go 4 app update are ‘near real-time image transmission’ and some improved camera control features.
As any experienced drone pilot will tell you, if your aircraft offers first-person view (FPV), the faster the image can be transmitted from the air to the screen in your hand, the less likely there is a collision. Believe it or not that DJI is promoting near real-time, but at least as far as the Mavic Pro and the newer Phantom 4 Pro and Inspire 2 are concerned, there is only a slight increase in video transmission speed. I don’t mean to disparage the achievements, but we already enjoy near-real-time FPV.
Stay tuned. With this breaking news, it’s now nighttime. I’ll fly out into the sunshine tomorrow and update if I notice any significant differences in the video streaming.
Enhanced video playback and editing features are a nice touch. DJI lets you easily create movies from your aerial footage, including music and built-in templates that are also updated in DJI Go 4.
We return to DJI’s main promotion: adjusting camera settings. Of course, you can adjust your camera settings before this. The trick here is to expand your ability to control those camera settings while in flight. Most of the drones currently supported by DJI Go 4 are more like winged cameras, so the more camera controls you have, the better.
Available for Android devices running Android 4.4 and higher. DJI Go is a free app on the Google Play Store, available for download now.
Do you hate the existing DJI Go app and are looking for improvements? We hope this is it.
