Have you recently received a new DJI Neo? If so, you may have some questions about setting up Neo for its first flight.
In this article and video tutorial we will consider:
- What’s in the various combos?
- intelligent flight mode
- Charge all batteries
- Download and install DJI Fly software
- Perform your first firmware update
Whether you’re new to drones or have some experience, you’ve probably noticed that DJI Neo is unique in the DJI ecosystem. You can fly Neo without a controller, using only your phone, or using only the DJI remote controller and DJI Goggles 3.
Among the many aspects of Neo we can cover, today we’ll focus on what it takes to get Neo out of the box and into the air.
In future videos we’ll look at all the different flight modes and how to control Neo.

DJI Neo
When you look at the Neo, you’ll notice that it’s very small and very light to hold in your hand.
From the front, a small gimbal guard protects Neo’s single-axis gimbal.
Unlike traditional camera drones, which typically use three-axis gimbals, Neo’s single-axis gimbal is electronically stabilized.
The stabilization of the DJI Neo is similar to that of DJI action cameras, utilizing DJI’s proprietary Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) technology.
To remove the gimbal cover: Just press the cover with two fingers and pull the cover.
If you continue to look around the drone, you will see two buttons. One is at the back and the other is at the front. The buttons on the front are used to select various autonomous flight modes.
DJI Neo intelligent flight modes include:
- follow me
- drone
- one
- rocket
- spotlight
- custom – This allows the user to precisely define the functionality of the flight mode.
To select a flight modePress the Select button until you find the mode you want.
The buttons on the back of the Neo serve a dual purpose. This button is used to turn Neo on and off, and is also used to pair Neo with a physical remote.
To power on NeoPress the power button once and then hold it until you hear a beep and the LED lights up. To turn off Neo, press the power button once, then press and hold it.
Below the power button on the back is a USB-C port that can be used for:
- Charging the battery installed in Neo
- Update Neo’s firmware using the provided data and charging cable. This will be explained in detail in this article.
- Transfer videos from internal storage to your computer or mobile device
When it comes to internal storage, you will notice that the Neo does not have an SD card slot.
This is because the Neo, like the non-Pro versions of DJI mini drones, does not use a Micro SD card. All of Neo’s videos are stored in 22GB of internal storage.
Fortunately, in addition to accessing footage from your PC or Mac, DJI’s QuickTransfer feature allows you to wirelessly transfer footage to your mobile device.
sensor
There is an infrared vision sensor at the bottom of the Neo. These sensors help Neo remain stable and maintain a steady hover.
The Neo tracks subjects nicely, but lacks obstacle avoidance sensors. A lack of these sensors can result in a crash if flying close to an obstacle.
intelligent flight battery
The Intelligent Flight Battery gives Neo up to 17 minutes of flight time with the propeller guards installed.
Removing the propeller guard increases flight time to 18 minutes. Of course, flight times may vary depending on actual flight conditions.
To remove the batteryPress the tab and slide the battery out. To replace the battery, align the grooves on the battery with the grooves on Neo and push the battery in. You will hear a click when the battery is installed correctly.
To charge the battery
There are two ways to charge Neo’s battery:
Unfortunately, like most of DJI’s latest drones, a wall charger is not included. DJI suggests using a 65-watt charger, but we’ve found that a 65-watt or even a 100-watt PD charger works well.
If you have a drone-specific kit, you will need to charge the battery while inserting it into the Neo.
To charge a single battery inside NeoFind the USB-C port on the back of the Neo. Connect the provided USB-C charging cable to the port and then connect to the charger.
If you have one of the combo packages that includes three batteries and a battery hub, the hub can charge all three batteries at the same time. This can be done using any charger rated at 45 watts or higher.
To check how much charge is left in the batteryWhile in the charging hub, press the power button on the side of the hub.
To charge the battery within the battery hubMake sure it is fully seated on the hub. Plug the charger into an outlet, then connect the supplied USB-C cable to the hub. After a while, you will see the battery start to charge.
If you choose to combo with the RC-N3 remote controller, you will also need to charge the RC.
To charge the RC-N3 remote controllerFind the USB-C port on the bottom of the controller and connect it.
Once charging begins, the LED on the front of the remote controller will start blinking to indicate charging.
