Three people were injured in a shooting at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport on Christmas night, police said. Another person was stabbed. One person was in critical condition.
A second incident involving a firearm occurred later, authorities said.
According to the police, at around 9:45 p.m. local time, police responded to a report of a shooting outside the security checkpoint at a restaurant in Terminal 4 and found a woman and two men with gunshot wounds. All were hospitalized. The woman’s condition was classified as life-threatening. The men’s condition was stable.
Police detained a male and a female juvenile in the parking lot. He was taken to the hospital with at least one stab wound, but is said to be in stable condition. There were no initial signs that she had suffered any injuries.
Police said initial information indicates that all involved knew each other and that “an altercation escalated into a physical altercation” when one person produced a gun. It wasn’t clear which one.
Police said no one else was injured at the airport. As a precautionary measure, the police temporarily closed the security checkpoint and temporarily suspended Skytrain operations, but the police said, “The incident has been resolved and operations have returned to normal.”
Police later said a man received a text saying there was a possible shooter at the airport, showed up with a firearm and got into an “argument” with officers. He was detained and remanded in custody on several charges. Police said the two incidents are not related.
