The approved 2025 regular budget (RB) of $3.72 billion is about $1 million more than what the Secretary-General proposed in October to the General Assembly’s Fifth Committee, which oversees administrative and budgetary matters.
The regular budget funds UN programs across key areas, including political affairs, international justice and law, regional cooperation for development, human rights and humanitarian issues, and public information.
The organization also maintains a separate budget for peacekeeping operations, with a fiscal cycle of July 1 to June 30 and a yearly RB cycle.
Action Program for LLDC
In a separate action, the General Assembly adopted a program of action for landlocked developing countries for the decade 2024-2034. It aims to address the unique challenges faced by countries without direct access to the high seas.
Landlocked developing countries (LLDCs) face significant barriers to trade and development due to their dependence on transit countries, leading to high trade costs, delays and reduced competitiveness in global markets.
The Program of Action identifies five priorities: promoting sustainable economic growth through innovation and structural change, strengthening regional trade integration, improving transport connectivity, building climate resilience and ensuring effective implementation strategies.
The new framework builds on the Vienna Program of Action (2014-2024) and the Almaty Program of Action (2003), which laid the foundations for addressing persistent obstacles plaguing LLDCs.
