Paramount Pictures has reportedly greenlit a fourth Sonic the Hedgehog movie ahead of the release of Sonic 3 this weekend.
According to Variety, Sonic 4 is in the planning stages and is expected to release in spring 2027. No plot details have been shared.
The first two Sonic movies were box office successes for Paramount and Sega, grossing a total of $725.2 million and an additional $180 million from home entertainment rentals and digital purchases. A spinoff Paramount+ series, Knuckles, was also released earlier this year.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which opens Friday, is expected to top the North American box office with $55 to $60 million from 3,800 theaters. The film received positive reviews from critics, scoring an 87% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
All three Sonic movies were directed by Jeff Fowler, with Jim Carrey as Dr. Starring Robotnik and Ben Schwartz as Sonic.
In an interview with VGC last October, Sega’s president of transmedia, Justin Scarpone, said he had big ambitions for Sega’s future as an entertainment company and that he planned to open an official Sega store in Tokyo, Japan.
“The strategy is to transform us into an entertainment company whose core business is games, just as Disney said it was movies,” Scarpone said.
“We want to be in a position where we can be OK with people who have never played a game, but have seen all of our movies, been to a live show, been to an attraction, or bought one of our products, but they like our IP. goods.”
