Former world champions Phil Taylor and Raymond van Barneveld led a tribute to Wayne Mardle’s family following the death of his wife Donna ahead of the World Darts Championship.
Donna Mardle died aged 52 after a brief illness earlier this week, with Sky Sports Darts announcing her death during coverage of the opening day of this year’s tournament at Alexandra Palace.
Presenter Emma Patten said: “Wayne is the heart and soul of everything we do at Sky Sports Darts, but the center of his world, his wonderful wife Donna, sadly passed away earlier this week after a short illness.”
“We will remember Donna throughout this tournament. Wayne, you are in our thoughts, and you are in our hearts. We love you very much and we will see you soon.”
PDC issued a short statement after news of Wayne Mardle’s death was announced. “All our thoughts and condolences are with Wayne Mardle and his family following the passing of his wife Donna earlier this week.”
The darts world was quick to offer condolences on social media, with past and present players and fans sending supportive wishes to Mardle and his family.
Taylor, a 16-time world champion, told X: “So sad to hear of Donna Mardle’s passing. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the family.”
Van Barneveld, a five-time world champion, added: “Very shocked and saddened to hear of Donna Mardle’s death this evening. My condolences and thoughts to @Wayne501Mardle and family.”
Former BDO World Champion Stephen Bunting, who is also part of this year’s line-up, said: “My thoughts, prayers and sincere condolences to Wayne and his family on the sad passing of his beloved wife and best friend Donna. “He posted.
Steve Beaton, who failed to qualify for his 33rd successive World Darts Championships, said: “Life is too short. I love you mate.”
