Trent Alexander-Arnold is adamant about one thing when discussing a potential new contract for Liverpool.
The vice-captain’s current contract, along with Virgil van Dijk and Mo Salah, expires at the end of this season, with just 18 days left until non-English speaking suitors are free to approach a possible pre-contract agreement if they do not contact all three. Until then, don’t use new terms.
The Egyptian winger put the cat among the pigeons by publicly declaring after last month’s win over Southampton that he had yet to receive an offer from the club (something that has since changed). The statement prompted Jamie Carragher to criticize 32. -A three year old called ‘Selfish’.
Trent insists contract negotiations will remain private
While Salah has been very transparent about his desire to remain at Liverpool, Trent has insisted that any negotiations over a new contract for him will remain very private.
In an interview with Sky Sports’ Melissa Reddy, the Reds vice-captain declared: “I have been at the club for 20 years. “I have signed four or five contract extensions but none of them have been publicly implemented and this one is no different.”
Trent leaves us guessing about his future
Trent’s insistence that his contract issues will not be ‘played out in the open’ leaves us guessing as to whether he will sign a new contract with his youth club.
Coincidentally, earlier this week Leddy claimed that re-signing the 26-year-old could be the most difficult task for Liverpool to pull off, in part because the ‘biggest alternative’ is in Real Madrid.
In the same interview, the right-back said he was immediately impressed by Arne Slot’s ‘incredible’ interest and obsession with football. Manchester United fans will be hoping that the manager’s excellent reign so far can convince the England international to leave. Commit for the long term.
As David Ornstein reported last weekend, Trent has been offered a new contract by the club. Their desire to keep him legitimate seems clear, so the burning question is whether the vice-captain will repay the same loyalty and remain a one-club player beyond next summer.
It may be a few more weeks before we get an answer, but until then we will remain positive and confident that this ongoing story will have a happy ending.
