Exiled former Syrian leader Bashar Assad is in Moscow, Russian state media said Sunday, citing Kremlin sources.
Assad fled Syria after rebels stormed the capital Damascus on Sunday morning. He remained in power for nearly 25 years, presiding over a bloody civil war in the latter half of his reign.
Russia’s TASS news agency said Assad and his family had been granted asylum by Russia on humanitarian grounds after arriving in Moscow.
TASS also reported that Russia wants negotiations on Syria’s future to take place under the aegis of the United Nations.
