South Korea’s President Yoon Seok-yeol is taking steps to be removed from his position after declaring martial law, plunging the country into a political crisis. South Korean opposition lawmakers filed a motion Wednesday to impeach Yoon. Here’s how the process might unfold:
Since the end of military rule in the 1980s, only two presidents have gone through impeachment proceedings in Korea.
Park Geun-hye, the former leader of Yoon’s party, was impeached and removed from office in 2017 on charges related to a widespread corruption scandal. And in 2004, former President Roh Moo-hyun was impeached on charges of illegal election campaigning, but the Constitutional Court overturned this and reinstated him as president.
