Bangladesh 164 (Shadman 64, Seales 4-5, Shamar 3-49) and 268 (Jaker 91, Shadman 46, Mehidy 42, Roach 3-36) beats. west indies 146 (Carty 40, Brathwaite 39, Lana 5-61, Mahmoud 2-19), 185 (Hodge 55, Brathwaite 43, Taizul 5-50, Mahmoud 2-20) 101 runs.
Rana took his first Test five-wicket haul in the second innings to help West Indies post 146.
Bangladesh only scored 164 in the first innings, but performed poorly in the second innings as well. This was courtesy of Jaker, who smashed five sixes and eight fours in his counter-attacking 91. Jaker scored 62 of Bangladesh’s 75 runs in the morning session of day four.
On the morning of the fourth day, Jaker took the keys for Bangladesh and started ahead of 211. It didn’t start well, with Alzarri Joseph popping the top of his helmet. Bangladesh physio Bayezid Islam Khan took some time to get rid of Jaker as BCB were wary of his history of concussions.
The situation worsened as Bangladesh lost successive wickets.
Taijul was bowled short for 14 after he and Jaker added 34 runs for the sixth wicket. Mominul Haque completed his second Test pair when he fell off the fourth ball. He looked visibly sore as he left, with Bangladesh’s tail exposed.
Jaker chased the West Indies attack with his back against the wall. He looped Kemar Roach over wicketkeeper Joshua Da Silva for a boundary. Jaker timed Alzarri’s full shots in the first six Tests, scoring three successive fifties in the first three Tests. He is the second Bangladeshi player to achieve the feat after Zakir Hasan.
Jaker was successful off the next two balls. He hit a short ball over the slips for four and then hooked a six. Jaker smashed Roach with a wide long-on in the next over, but fought back with two more wickets. Roach removed Mahmud and Taskin in successive overs.
But Jaker caught him off guard once more. He smashed Shamar Joseph for two four-overs, hit both pull shots and fired Roach straight into the ground for his fourth six. His fifth six was off Shamar and over mid-wicket before falling into the deep later in the over.
Taijul started things off in the 5th over when Mikyle Louis was tangled up. Trying to drive the ball, Louis got it off his front foot and Shahadat Hossain claimed a diving catch at front short leg.
Feeling the need to gain momentum, Brathwaite chased down the Bangladesh bowling. He had already picked a boundary with a square cut but drove Mahmoud over covers after lunch. He hit Taijul wide long-on for a six but Keacy Carty failed to get the bowlers out at the other end.
Taskin put Carty behind for 14 after a pile of dot balls, before Taijul claimed a big one from Brathwaite. He harassed the West Indies captain a few times before turning and popping the shoulder of Brathwaite’s bat. Mahmudul Hasan Joy ran to his right at slip and completed a tumbling catch. Taijul then bowled the ball on a rough patch and spun back through the large gap between Alick Athanaze’s bat and pad. Atanadze, who went on a wide drive, looked confused by the approach from the six-ball stay.
All this time, Hodge has maintained a sharp-looking body while picking regular boundaries. He hit Rana and cut Taskin in successive overs. He hit Mehidy for 24 and was inside out against Taijul before tea.
West Indies started the third session on a happy note. Hodge got 50 off the first ball after the break, but he too fell soon after. Hodge plays a Taijul delivery that stays very low, trapping him lbw. Keshav Maharaj and Shoaib Bashir had also rescued him in a similar manner earlier.
Taskin then finished with a ball that also caught Justin Greaves slightly low, but the batsman made no effort to get low enough to hit the ball. Joshua Da Silva’s miserable series ended when Taijul got him lbw, while another West Indies batsman was dropped lbw on a ball that could have been played on the front foot.
When Mehidy brought Mahmud in for his second spell, he made an immediate impact. He got rid of Alzarri and Roach to put Bangladesh over the edge. Then came the decisive moment when Rana, who changed the momentum of the game with 5 hits in an innings, beat Shamar with a yorker to seal the hard-fought victory.
