Alisson recently missed nine Liverpool games in eight weeks due to a hamstring injury, and has now explained why he will need such a long time to recover.
The Reds’ number one has already suffered a hamstring injury twice this season and three times in 2024. This amounts to a total of 26 games missed to date.
Alisson has been sidelined since his latest injury, which saw him sent off late in the win over Crystal Palace on October 5, forcing him to miss the club’s last nine games.
Arne Slot revealed in October that Liverpool were “looking into” the Brazilian’s extensive injury history as it was “uncommon for goalkeepers”.
Now the 32-year-old explained why he had to sit out such a long period of time when speaking to OneFootball recently.
“My recovery is going very well,” he said. “It’s been seven weeks since the injury occurred.
“It was a hamstring tendon injury, so tendon-related injuries are more sensitive. Since the injury occurred days or weeks ago, it requires extra care and recovery time.
“So everything is going according to plan.”
One big relief is that it wasn’t an injury that required surgery, but you can understand why Liverpool didn’t force his recovery.
Initial reports suggested Alisson would be sidelined for up to six weeks, but that period has come and gone, meaning Caoimhin Kelleher has taken over the starting role.
Alisson’s deputy did a great job, but Alisson wasn’t surprised. Alisson said: “The level he plays at is no surprise to me. I’m not surprised because I follow him every day.
“I know what he can do, but he’s shown a lot of maturity.
“He is a goalkeeper who not only performs well but also gives confidence. He is a goalkeeper who gives confidence to the team and everyone knows how the Liverpool goalkeeper likes to play.”
In news regarding his future, Alisson also reaffirmed his desire to “fulfill” his Liverpool contract. It runs until 2026, but there is an option to extend it for another year.
