As I said yesterday, we are 1-1 up against Arsenal, who are clear title challengers this season and are absolutely third in the league after 11 games compared to the distance they were at this time last season. Between Chelsea and Arsenal.
As I said yesterday, I haven’t seen anything or seen Arsenal being better than Chelsea this season. Progress is visible and clear.
But we still have the same three main problems, which are actually pretty big problems, and have not yet been addressed in our team composition and the four-window plan we keep hearing about. To me, this issue needs to be resolved and it should have been resolved much sooner. That’s the only reason I’m still very cautious about getting too excited about Chelsea right now.
These problems are the spine.
But, but, but Robert Sánchez will be a world-class goalkeeper one day. No, no, not him. Stop it. Sanchez once again gave up a goal against Arsenal last night that should never have gone in, and he does this too often.
Chelsea should invest in a top and proven goalkeeper. Every passing game seems to further prove this.
Chelsea also need to invest in a dominant leader in defence. A player who can organize the defensive line and command the surrounding area. We need a proven, established all-round centre-back. We need to eradicate lack of concentration and poor defensive positioning, and organizers on the pitch can help with this. But also a lot of this is used by Enzo Maresca to guide training and improve all of the above.
Imagine Pedro Neto crossing to the dominant striker. And no, before anyone says it, I am not underestimating Nicholas Jackson or disrespecting him. He just isn’t that profile, and it’s not his fault. You can’t make someone other than that person. He was great and the qualities he had were great. But then again, he’s Nicolas Anelka, not Didier Drogba, and that’s still a compliment. We need a more physical striker who can harass defenders, be a threat in the air and keep the ball.
So did anyone watch Liam Delap over the weekend? He’s got Diego Costa. I like what I’ve seen so far. But you all know who we think we should sign up for.
People always want me to be named when I say or write these things, but it’s not up to me. We have a large team of expert recruiters who can do this and find the right profile. Finding them is beyond me. They are the ones who have data and scouting networks all over the world and have thousands of players on their data sheets. Go get what we need!
