President Trump has repeatedly claimed that he would end the war that began with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 in one day.
Anticipating looming Ukraine funding cuts, outgoing Joe Biden’s administration is seeking to send the last more than $6 billion in U.S. security assistance to Kiev before President Trump’s Jan. 20 inauguration.
Despite Trump’s past comments, Ukraine has adopted a conciliatory tone to secure the support of the incoming administration following its re-election, demonstrating what Kiev has to offer in return for U.S. support.
“It was very important for Ukraine and all of Europe to continue to listen to the then 45th President of the United States about ‘peace through strength,’” Prime Minister Zelensky said in a speech this week.
“If this becomes the policy principle of the 47th President of the United States, the United States and the whole world will undoubtedly benefit,” the Ukrainian president added.
