Quincy Jones, a musician and producer who worked with Michael Jackson, Frank Sinatra and others, has died at the age of 91.
Jones’ publicist, Arnold Robinson, said Jones “passed away peacefully” Sunday night at his home in Bel Air.
“Tonight, it is with great hearts that we share the news of the passing of our father and brother, Quincy Jones. Although this is a tremendous loss for our family, we celebrate the great life he lived. “We know there will be no more,” the family said in a statement.
Jones is best known as the producer of Michael Jackson’s Thriller album.
During a career that spanned more than 75 years, he won 28 Grammy Awards and was named one of the most influential jazz musicians of the 20th century by Time magazine.
He worked closely with Frank Sinatra early in his career, reworking the singer’s classic Fly Me To The Moon from waltz to swing.
In the film The Wiz, Jones found herself working with a 19-year-old Michael Jackson. He went on to produce Jackson’s album Off the Wall, which sold 20 million copies.
He also produced Popstar’s sequels, Thriller and Bad.
In 1985, Jones gathered 46 of America’s most popular singers of the time, including Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, Tina Turner and Cyndi Lauper, to record We Are the World.
Jones co-wrote the song to raise funds for people suffering from severe famine in Ethiopia.
The record was the equivalent of Band Aid’s Do They Know It’s Christmas in the United States.
The hit reached number one in the UK and US and was performed at Live Aid.
Jones has also composed soundtracks for more than 50 films and television programs, including the 1969 British film The Italian Job.
On the big screen, he produced The Color Purple, a film that introduced the public to two then-unknown performers: Oprah Winfrey and Whoopi Goldberg.
On the small screen, he was one of the creators of the hit TV show The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.
But what Jones excelled at was music. In addition to winning several Grammy Awards, including the Legend Award in 1992, he has also been recognized at the Emmys, Tony Awards, and Oscar Awards.
Jones was married three times and had seven children, including music producer Quincy Jones III and actress Rashida Jones, famous for the American version of The Office.
Jones’ family said the music producer was “a truly unique person” and that “Quincy Jones’ heart will forever beat through his music and infinite love.”
Major tribute, playwright Jeremy O’Harris said at Jones’ “contributions to American culture have been endless,” he said, noting that he was the first black person to be nominated for an Oscar for best score, among other accomplishments.
