New York — Timothée Chalamet made a surprise appearance at his lookalike contest in Manhattan on Sunday.
At least one person was arrested after a large crowd formed in Washington Square Park and police broke up the event.
Chalamet posed for photos with his doppelgängers, some of whom were dressed as characters from the movies “Wonka” and “Dune.”
This similar contest was one of several hosted by YouTube personality Anthony Po and promised $50 to the winner. As word spread on social media, thousands of people responded.
From ‘Stupid Joke’ to ‘Mayhem’
Minutes after the game started, and before Chalamet arrived, police ordered the group to disperse from the park. Organizers were fined $500 for an “unauthorized costume contest,” and police said one person was issued a citation for disorderly conduct.
“It started out as a stupid joke, but now it’s turned into mayhem,” YouTube creator Paige Nguyen told The Associated Press.
The group moved to another park, and the audience ultimately chose Miles Mitchell, a senior at the College of Staten Island, as the winner.
“I’m both elated and overwhelmed,” Mitchell said. “There were too many good lookalikes. It was such a mess.”
Contestants were asked to demonstrate their French skills, their romantic plans for Kylie Jenner and what they would do to make the world a better place.
