Donald Trump’s campaign has accused Labor volunteers led by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer of “blatant foreign interference” in the US election after they traveled to the US to help Kamala Harris’s campaign.
The campaign filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission in Washington demanding an immediate investigation into “apparent illegal foreign donations made by the British Labor Party and accepted by President Harris.”
The complaint cited media reports and a now-deleted LinkedIn post by Sofia Patel, the UK’s Labor Party operations director. He wrote that “nearly 100” current and former Labor staffers would travel to the country in the coming weeks to help with the election. Democratic Vice President Harris.
“Those looking for foreign interference in our elections need look no further than LinkedIn posts,” the complaint reads.
“There is noticeable interference.”
The center-left Labor Party, which views the U.S. Democratic Party as its sister party, came to power last July.
Starmer has since sought to build a relationship with Trump, including meeting him at Trump Tower during a visit to New York last September.
Starmer, who is traveling on a plane to Samoa, told reporters he did not expect his relationship with Trump to be strained if he wins the November 5 election. Labor volunteers have attended almost every US election, he added.
“They’re doing this in their spare time, they’re working as volunteers, and I think they’re staying with the other volunteers that are there,” he said.
“That’s what they’ve done in previous elections, that’s what they’re doing in this election, and it’s that simple.”
