Apple has updated the firmware for several older AirPod models. The new firmware revision is 6F21 and the previous firmware was 6A326. The affected models are:
- AirPods Max (Lightning only)
- AirPods 2
- AirPods 3
- AirPods Pro 1
That’s all except the USB-C versions of the new AirPods 4, AirPods Pro 2, and AirPods Max. Apple stopped updating the original AirPods firmware some time ago, as it was discontinued in 2019 and replaced with the second-generation AirPods (now called AirPods 2).
According to Apple’s AirPods firmware page, this release only brings “bug fixes and other improvements.”
We expect AirPods Pro 2 to receive a firmware update to version 7B19 (or later) at any time to enable the new hearing health features in iOS 18.1.
AirPods Firmware Update
There is no way to force an upgrade to new firmware. It will install automatically once your AirPods are in the case and charging. It may take hours or days to download the latest firmware. If you haven’t used your AirPods for a long time, taking them out of the case, using them for a few minutes, and then putting them back on the charger may help speed things up.
To check which firmware version your AirPods are running, simply open the Settings app, select your connected AirPods (near the top), then scroll down past all the options. for Take a look at the section version line. This information can also be found at: general > for > (AirPods name).
