Dewi Lake will retain the captaincy of Wales for the November Tests as coach Warren Gatland named two cap players in his 35-man squad for the international squad against Fiji, Australia and South Africa.
Lake captained Wales on their tour of Australia in July and was co-captain with Jac Morgan at last year’s World Cup. He remains captain despite Morgan’s return after injury.
Lake will therefore lead the team once again when they face the Wallabies at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium on Sunday 17 November.
Australia won both Tests when the two sides met in July. It was 36-28 in Melbourne and 25-16 in Sydney.
Australia will also play England, Scotland and Ireland in the Cardiff match.
“I thought Dewi did really well in the captaincy over the summer, so I decided to continue in that role this autumn,” Gatland said on Monday.
Morgan is one of several players to be recalled after missing the two-Test tour to Australia, along with Adam Beard, Ryan Elias, Will Rowlands, Henry Thomas and Tomos Williams.
Also back in the Test reckoning is 33-year-old flyhalf Gareth Anscombe, who last played for Wales in the 40-6 World Cup win over Australia in Lyon 13 months ago.
He suffered an injury in the warm-up for the next match against Georgia and missed the rest of the season, which ruled him out of the Six Nations and tour of Australia.
Dragons scrumhalf Rhodri Williams returns to the international stage for the first time in a decade. The 31-year-old earned three caps in 2013 and 2014 but has not been selected since.
Gatland named only two unrestricted players – Gloucester’s Freddie Thomas and Scarlets wing Blair Murray.
Thomas played for England under-20s and Murray is a former New Zealand schoolboys international.
Wales have lost their last nine Tests and a loss to Fiji in Cardiff on November 10 would equal Wales’ longest losing streak.
But Gatland said: “We think this is an exciting team with some young players coming back. We know we will be working incredibly hard as a group this November.”
