A former developer who worked on Halo Infinite confirmed that there was a battle royale mode during the game’s development, but despite it being a “fantastic experience,” it was sadly canceled.
Rumors about Infinite’s battle royale mode have been circulating for years, and it’s generally believed that the folks at Some Affinity are the culprits. For example, Windows Central’s Jez Corden reported this idea in early 2022.
Well, it looks like that report is actually accurate. Some Affinity’s former design director Mike Clopper, who recently joined Activision-Blizzard’s Raven Software, specifically mentions the battle royale mode on his LinkedIn page.
“I led a large team of designers working on Halo’s canceled battle royale mode,” he wrote. “I believe this product could be a game changer for the franchise. We loved playing it, we put in the work and it was a fantastic experience despite the cancellation.”
While the battle royale concept is a bit overblown, I think Halo Infinite’s spin on this idea could have been a lot of fun and may have helped keep the game relevant.
As for Halo Infinite, developer 343 recently rebranded itself as Halo Studios and announced that it is developing several games, all of which will run on Unreal Engine 5.
What do you think? Do you want to see Infinite’s battle royale?
