“I consider myself an original Republican. “We used to call Biden and Kamala ‘corpse and cackle’ at home.” “I’m a life-long Republican: small government, low taxes, no intervention in our lives.” “I grew up in the Reagan era, and Reagan was a hero in my house. So he was my hero.” “I don’t think you can say in this day and age if someone is pro-choice, they have to be progressive.” Abortion is changing the Republican Party this election. Here in Arizona, nearly a third of Republicans said they would support Proposition 139, a state ballot measure that would legalize abortion up to about 24 weeks. “Twenty years ago, that would never have been the case.” We have Roe v. We spoke with three longtime Republican supporters about how Wade’s termination is changing their voting. “I was raised Catholic. I never knew anyone who had an abortion. “I don’t think I ever said that out loud until after I got married.” “I wasn’t really surprised when I heard the oar had flipped over. “Our state law has reverted to the old law of 1864.” “No one could believe it. I mean, it really came too fast.” An 1864 law passed during the Civil War when Arizona was still a territory banned abortion almost entirely. “Even conservatives in Arizona didn’t think it meant much.” The law was overturned last May, and the ban was imposed 15 weeks later. But it has caused some Arizonans to reconsider their stance on abortion. “I had to stop and think. Well, what do you think about that? What are the potential impacts? And the more I read, the more news articles I saw, the more fear I had for women. I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I am a mother and grandmother of a 10-year-old child. I believe in the sanctity of life, but I do not believe it is my right to choose others.” “I think when people go through something like this, it’s probably the most painful decision they’ve ever made. I was a delegate to the 2016 convention, and the day I voted to attend the convention in Arizona, I realized I was bleeding. It turned out that I was released while pregnant. I had to go to the doctor and get a D&C. Let’s say the 1864 law went into effect. Would they have allowed me to have a D&C? Did they investigate me? I voted for Trump in 2016. “I voted for Trump in 2020, but I will never vote for him again.” “President Trump said Roe v. We are proud to have dismantled the Wade decision. It doesn’t serve women well. It doesn’t help the country. “So I want to tell my friends that I can’t support it and I don’t know how I can support candidate Trump if Prop. 139 is the problem.” “I will always be a Republican. Listening to NPR in the morning reminds me every day why I’m a Republican, but at this point I can’t vote for either side or for either side.” “I will vote for Kamala Harris. I tried phone banking once and found myself doing it again. “This time, I think a lot of Arizonans feel, our votes actually matter.”
