October 6, Astana, Kazakhstan. Trend reported that voter turnout for the Kazakhstan nuclear power plant construction referendum reached 61.56% as of 6 p.m. local time.
The National Election Commission reported that 7.5 million out of 12.24 million voters have voted so far.
By region, Kyzylorda region recorded the highest voter turnout at 79.87%, while Almaty recorded the lowest voter turnout at 22.91%.
Voting for the referendum began on October 6.
On September 2, 2024, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev announced the date for the referendum.
In 2023, the Kazakh Ministry of Energy identified four main competitors for the nuclear power plant project. They are China’s CNNC, Korea’s Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Corporation, France’s EDF, and Russia’s Rosatom. International organizations, including the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), will also participate in the project to provide additional oversight.
