In celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Monster Hunter series, you can now raise monsters instead of hunting them with the help of some Digimon Digivices. Monster Hunter is teaming up with Bandai and Digimon to release portable virtual pet toys based on the series’ most iconic monsters.
The official Japanese Digimon Twitter account shared a look at the upcoming collaboration, which features two Digimon COLOR devices, named for the fact that their screens are in color rather than the usual black and white. This device is available in two designs: One is red “Rathalos Color” and the other is blue “Zinogre Color”. As with most digital pet toys, you start out growing eggs that can become one of eight different monsters, which can then branch out further. The video in the tweet announcement promises to feature 36 monsters, including Khezu, Rajang, Tigrex, Nargacuga, Gore Magala, and Mizutsune.
It’s safe to assume that Rathalos and Zinogre will also be part of the extensive lineup, not only because of their popularity and status as inspiration for the devices, but also because the collaboration includes two new exclusive monsters, their unmistakable Digivolution. More specifically, it is a DNA Digivolution that combines with other Digimon. The first new monster is ‘LosGreymon’, a combination of Rathalos and Greymon, and the second is the very appropriate name ‘Jinogarurumon’, a combination of Jinogawa Garurumon. All four of these monsters are well-loved, and the resulting designs are sure to please fans of both franchises.
The Monster Hunter Digimon COLOR unit retails for 7,700 yen (approximately US$54) and is available for pre-order on the Premium Bandai website. Unfortunately, this toy is currently sold exclusively in Japan, making it quite difficult to import directly from the premium Bandai online store. The pre-order period runs from September 26th to October 28th, during which time we can only hope that the collaboration will make its way outside of Japan. Because who wouldn’t want a digital monster they can raise and keep in their pocket?
