Babar Azam announced his resignation as white-ball captain of the Pakistan cricket team in a late-night post on Tuesday. Babar Azam was previously Pakistan’s skipper in all formats. He had previously stepped down from the captaincy following Pakistan’s poor performance in the 2023 ODI World Cup in India. Fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi succeeded him as T20I captain but was soon replaced by Babar, who was reappointed as skipper in March 2024.
However, his second tenure as Pakistan captain was not at all successful as he was eliminated in the group stage of the 2024 T20 World Cup. In that campaign, Pakistan lost to a much lower ranked team, the United States. Pakistan also lost to India despite being in a comfortable position in the match.
Pressure has mounted on Pakistan cricket in recent months, especially after the loss to Bangladesh in the Test series at home.

“It has been an honor to lead this team, but now it is time to step back and focus on my role.
“Captainship has been a rewarding experience, but it has also come with significant pressure. I want to prioritize performance, enjoy batting and spend quality time with my family. This brings me joy.”
