Willier Abreu had two hits and an RBI double, and the visiting Boston Red Sox took advantage of 10 walks to win 4-1 over the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday night.
Boston right-hander Tanner Hauck (9-10) threw five scoreless innings, allowing one hit and one walk in the first game of a three-game series.
The Red Sox (79-78) have won three straight, while the Blue Jays (73-84) have lost four straight. Boston leads the season series 7-4.
Toronto right-hander Chris Bassitt (10-14) allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits and seven walks over 4 1/3 innings, striking out two.
Boston scored in the second inning. Abreu walked and advanced to second when Connor Wong reached first on an error by first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. He advanced to second on Nick Sogard’s infielder’s choice grounder and then scored on Vaughn Grissom’s sacrifice fly to left.
The Red Sox added a run in the third, when Triston Casas and Tyler O’Neal walked with two outs, and Abreu hit an RBI double to right.
The lead grew to 3-0 in the fourth, when Sogard doubled, walked to third, and Ceddanne Rafaela scored on a groundout to Bassitt.
Zach Pop replaced Bassitt in the fifth after Casas walked and advanced to third on Abreu’s single. Wong walked before the inning ended on Sogard’s double-play grounder.
The Blue Jays put a runner on first base in the fifth when Addison Barger walked with two outs. Ernie Clement singled to left field and Jonathan Clase flew out to left field.
Greg Weissert finished the sixth inning, giving up two singles and a double play as Hauck’s replacement.
Boston scored in the eighth off Dylan Tate, who walked and stole second, then came back to score on Rafaela’s infielder’s choice grounder.
Chris Martin, Boston’s fifth pitcher of the day, allowed a leadoff single to Nathan Lukes in the ninth, and Lukes scored on a one-out single by Spencer Horwitz.
Boston placed right-hander Kenley Jansen (shoulder) on the injured list on Monday and recalled right-hander Chase Shugart from Triple-A Worcester.
