Who won? Star Citizen and Elite DangerousA crowdfunded space sim sensation that two of the genre’s most famous game directors offered us a decade ago? Star Citizen is the spiritual successor to Wing Commander and Privateer, while Elite Dangerous is the direct sequel to Elite, Frontier: Elite 2, and Frontier: First Encounters. Well, it depends on how you define “victory.” Or, in fact, “exists.” This is just one of the many heated disagreements on this week’s Best Games Ever Podcast, along with GTA vs. Saints Row, Call of Duty vs. Medal of Honor. And another one we don’t remember.
Do you remember Lemmings vs The Humans? Well, Lemmings was a puzzle game where you had to lure a large group of the titular rodents through increasingly evil levels. You used units like builders, blockers, diggers, etc. I don’t know, but it was a long time ago and I’m 40 (ie dead). The Humans was like a ‘clone’ of Lemmings, and in my childhood head there was a rivalry between 90s pop culture icons Oasis vs Blur, Oasis vs Ocean Color Scene, Oasis vs Oasis.
Who won that contest? Well, these are subjective. You could define it in terms of sales (hard to verify) or cultural impact (hard to quantify), or simply which series has survived the longest. In that case, The Humans won by three years, as the last one came out on the Nintendo DS in 2009. No one noticed. The last Lemmings game was a flop on the PSP and PS2 in 2006, to minimal fanfare, and was little more than an improved re-release of the original rather than a proper sequel. It’s notable that both series made their final dent in the seventh generation of handhelds, and it’s quite amusing to me that the once beloved Lemmings (who has a bronze statue in Dundee) lost this battle to the bronze-less The Humans (who doesn’t have one in Dundee or anywhere else).
