Manchester United have officially confirmed an agreement with Foster + Partners to develop a masterplan for Old Trafford and the club’s surrounding land.
United have released a statement saying a “world-renowned global architecture studio” will be responsible for delivering the plans which will ultimately lead to the design of a new world-class stadium for the club.
Last month, a report in The Peoples Person suggested that Sir Norman Foster, a prominent British architect and close friend of Sir Jim Ratcliffe, could be the man to redesign Old Trafford and transform the surrounding area.
The award-winning architect not only oversaw the construction of Wembley but also supervised the renovation of the German Reichstag.
United now say Foster + Partners’ focus is on delivering plans for a “world-class football destination and home for United fans”.
The company will also develop a comprehensive masterplan featuring mixed-use development that will benefit the local community, attract new residents, increase employment opportunities and transform the area into a vibrant destination for visitors from Manchester, the UK and beyond.
Lord Foster, founder and chairman of Foster + Partners, said: “As a proud Mancunian, I am passionate about the opportunity to regenerate Manchester’s great industrial heritage, create vibrant new mixed-use communities with sustainable and improved transport links, and provide homes and jobs for the local community – all of which will be facilitated by a world-class stadium for Manchester United, the world’s most famous football team.”
Colette Roche, United’s chief operating officer, said: “We have a clear vision to transform and revitalise the club-owned land around Old Trafford and we knew Foster + Partners was the best partner to help us develop our plans.”
“This is a region of Greater Manchester ready for major new investment to help it thrive again and we are determined to help deliver that outcome.”
“We want this area to be a true destination, not only providing an unrivalled match-day experience for fans, but also supporting other forms of entertainment, leisure, business and residential facilities surrounding a world-class stadium.”
“Lord Foster has unrivalled experience in delivering projects of this scale and ambition.”
United are currently in substantial consultation with supporters, community members, local authorities and the Old Trafford Redevelopment Task Force.
It is understood that feedback received from all these parties will be taken into consideration when developing the master plan.
A final decision on Old Trafford – whether to renovate the stadium or build a completely new one – is expected to be made before the end of the year, according to a recent report from The Peoples Person.
