The Columbus Blue Jackets plan to remember Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau during the upcoming NHL season.
Johnny Gaudreau played for the Blue Jackets for the past two seasons after playing for the Calgary Flames for more than eight seasons. He and his younger brother Matthew, a hockey teammate at Boston College, were killed last month when they were struck by a drunk driver while riding their bikes near their hometown in New Jersey.
Blue Jackets players will wear the stickers on their helmets starting Monday’s preseason opener at the Buffalo Sabres and will wear them through the 2024-25 season. The blue decal with gray trim features the family name surrounded by two doves, with Johnny’s jersey number 13 and Matthew’s college number 21 in white.
The Blue Jackets will hold a moment of silence when they face the St. Louis Blues in their first preseason home game in two days.
And when the regular season begins at the Minnesota Wild on Oct. 10, and throughout the season, the Blue Jackets will wear Johnny’s number, No. 13, on their uniforms.
Additional activities honoring the brothers will be announced at a later date.
