“That’s the challenge. If you look at players like Mackenzie Martin, Alex Mann, Cam Winnett, they’ve gone on to play international rugby,” Sherratt said.
“I’m very happy that they did that, but you have to take into account that they are young players who are still developing.
“I saw MacKenzie play for (semi-pro) Cardiff against Newport in September last year. Nine months later, he’s playing against Ireland, the No. 1 team in the world, and touring Australia.
“Their climb has been incredible. It’s about them realising that rugby, like any other career, is not a straight line to success. They’ll have setbacks and injuries along the way and they’ll not be selected because there’s competition for places.
“We’ll see their resilience in the second season, when there’s more expectation on them – not from me, but from themselves. It’s how they react when there are bumps in the road. It’s a bumpy career path, so that’s inevitable.”
