Ahead of Tuesday’s hearing, a House subcommittee released a bombshell report accusing Cuomo of making false statements. Cover up the death toll.
15,000 elderly people died. COVID in New York Nursing Homes 2020There was Criticism of March 25 directive grows His administration issued an order that, in part, said, “No resident shall be readmitted or denied admission to a nursing home solely based on a confirmed or probable diagnosis of COVID-19.”
The 48-page report says Cuomo told reporters on March 10, 2020, that the coronavirus outbreak in nursing homes was a “nightmare” scenario and that it could be “like fire through dry grass” for former President Donald Trump’s administration. And yet he issued a statewide, deadly directive.
“The former governor and his staff alternated between different methods to determine nursing home deaths throughout the pandemic,” the report said.
Cuomo and the governor’s press secretary, Melissa DeRosa, also cited testimony from Cuomo’s policy adviser, Jim Malatras. I will edit the report.
A Cuomo spokesperson responded in part, “What the report confirms is that… the out-of-hospital nursing home count was initially withheld because of legitimate concerns about its accuracy… The report also acknowledges for the first time that the federal government, not the states, determines who can and should be transferred from hospitals to nursing homes if they are COVID-positive.”
The spokesperson added that the report was designed to deflect attention from President Trump’s “failed pandemic leadership.”
Meanwhile, lawmakers say New York state is still withholding documents critical to the investigation that could help shape future legislation to prevent tragedies like this from happening again.
