England captain Ollie Pope admitted his side “shot themselves in the foot” after a win-filled Test summer ended in defeat with a bizarre batting performance at Kia Oval.
England, who had been revitalised by bringing in new players early in the season, cruised to a 3-0 win over West Indies and were expected to repeat their performance against Sri Lanka after beating them at Old Trafford and Lord’s.
