Authorities say several people were shot on a highway near the southeastern Kentucky city of London on Saturday. A search is underway for the gunman.
At approximately 7 p.m. local time, the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office reported that “multiple people had been shot” and Interstate 75 was closed about nine miles north of London. The highway was fully reopened shortly before 9:30 p.m. local time, but the suspect was still on the run, the sheriff’s office reported.
A spokesperson for the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington told CBS News that they have received at least two patients so far in connection with the incident, but there is no update on their conditions. Lexington is about 90 miles north of London.
The sheriff’s office said they are looking for 32-year-old Joseph A. Couch in connection with the shooting. He is described as a white male, approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall and 154 pounds. A photo of Couch has also been released.
Kentucky State Police spokesman Patrolman Scotty Pennington urged Laurel County residents in the area to stay inside. Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms responded to a “serious incident” near I-75, assisting state and local police, the agency said.
Additional details about the incident were not immediately available. The exact number of victims remained unclear.
“We are aware of a shooting on I-75 in Laurel County, Kentucky,” Kentucky Gov. Andy Besha wrote in a social media post. “Law enforcement has closed the highway in both directions at Exit 49. Please avoid the area. More information will follow soon.”
