A day after San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Ricky Pearsall was shot during an attempted robbery in San Francisco, the rookie was released from the hospital Sunday afternoon, the team announced.
According to a league source, Piersol did not undergo surgery and was awake and alert during his hospital stay. His family was in his room Saturday night, the source said.
“He, his family and the entire San Francisco 49ers organization would like to thank the San Francisco Police Department, Emergency Medical Services, and the physicians and staff of San Francisco General Hospital,” the 49ers said in a statement Sunday.
The hospital announced that Pearsall, 23, was upgraded to “moderate condition” early Sunday morning.
According to police, he was shot after approaching the suspect in San Francisco’s Union Square area, which led to a physical altercation. Both Pearsall and the suspect were shot during the attempted robbery, police said.
On Saturday, police said a 17-year-old suspect from Tracy, California, about 60 miles east of San Francisco, was in custody. The suspect’s gun was recovered at the scene, SFPD Chief William Scott said.
Scott added that he did not believe Pearsall was targeted because he was an NFL player. Scott, who spoke with Pearsall about what happened, said police believe the suspect worked alone.
Pearsall was selected 31st overall by the 49ers in this year’s draft. He played three seasons at Arizona State and two at Florida.
