While PC and PS5 users loved the monkey-based mayhem of Black Myth: Wukong, Xbox gamers were waiting for news. The game’s Xbox port was delayed earlier this year as developer Game Science “optimized the Xbox Series S/X version to meet our quality standards.” There’s been no word since.
So what exactly is the issue? Most people assumed it had to do with trying to run the game on the weaker Xbox Series S, and according to this new report, that may be true.
According to insider eXtas1s, he is usually very trustworthy when discussing all things Game Pass, but less trustworthy outside of that. The problem is that Black Myth is suffering from a memory leak. Please keep in mind that all quotes from eXtas1s are translated, so they may not be completely accurate.
Speaking to people at Gamescom, eXtas1s said, “The game is known to have issues with a bug called a ‘memory leak’. This bug can cause serious crashes that can degrade the performance of Xbox consoles. Because of this issue, the game failed Xbox’s bug detection tests,Delayed indefinitely until optimization is complete. This game is for Series X|S.”
eXtas1s said that the game has already failed Xbox certification twice.
A memory leak occurs when RAM becomes increasingly full because data is loaded into RAM and not recycled properly.
The reason this is believable is because the PS5 version also seems to suffer from this issue. From my experience and numerous reports on Reddit, the longer the game is running, the worse the performance. The solution is to quit the game properly. Some PC users have also noticed that the game is eating up RAM.
This could be causing issues on the Xbox Series S, which has 6GB less RAM than the Series X and PS5, so memory leaks could occur much sooner. However, this is purely speculation.
Still, it’s a bit concerning that Game Science continues to remain silent about an Xbox version.
