Back-to-back World Cup-winning defensive coach Felix Jones has resigned from the England squad following revelations that he was feeling uneasy due to an unstable working environment.
Jones, who had been in the role for just seven months, was part of South Africa’s last two World Cup wins and revolutionised Steve Borthwick’s ‘blitz’ defence. His departure raises questions about Borthwick’s management style and his ability to maintain a happy working atmosphere given the departure of his highly regarded strength and conditioning boss Aled Walters to take up a role with Ireland under Andy Farrell earlier this month.
Kevin Sinfield is still involved but in a variety of roles, while another strength and conditioning coach, Tom Thompson, who has been in the role since 2014, has also left in recent weeks.
Walters was part of South Africa’s backroom team at the 2019 World Cup alongside Jones and worked under Borthwick at Leicester Tigers before joining England. Walters’ departure and the uncertainty surrounding Sinfield’s role are understood to have influenced Jones’ decision to leave.
The RFU have not commented on the situation but Jones’ decision will come as a huge frustration, especially following Walters’ departure.

Given his proven track record, Jones is likely to be in high demand, despite sources saying his contract includes a 12-month notice period, which is unlikely to be met.
Jones was instrumental in England’s improved performance in the Six Nations Championship earlier this year, finishing third and leading the side to a stunning win over Ireland at Twickenham, aided by his blitzing defensive system.
Jones, 37, began his coaching career at Munster after a neck injury ended his playing career and was capped 13 times by Ireland as a full-back between 2011 and 2015.
