Ewan Ashman scored three tries and Duhan van der Merwe equalled Scotland’s record for tries in the 42-7 win over the United States in Washington.

Scotland failed to match their 11-try performance against Canada last week, with the second half made even more chaotic by damp and stuffy conditions, but they still managed to score two more goals to secure a comfortable win.

Van der Merwe needed just six minutes to equal Stuart Hogg’s Scotland record of 27 tries when he latched on to Adam Hastings’ pass and slotted home.
Hastings added another point to Ashman’s treble, both courtesy of rolling mauls from the lineout, as the team went 28-7 ahead at half-time.
The United States had their own try as Ashman scored, with centre Tommaso Boni going down, while prop David Ainou was sent off for a foul shortly after the home side were booked for repeated fouls.
