Wales midfielder Daffyd Jenkins has undergone knee and shoulder surgery and will miss Exeter Chiefs’ opening game of the 2024-25 Premier League season.
The 21-year-old Exeter captain suffered a knee injury while representing Wales in Australia this summer and is also struggling with a rotator cuff injury.
Director of rugby Rob Baxter said the captain’s return timetable was “a bit fluid”.
“We’ll have to see how far he goes in the early stages of his rehab,” Baxter said.
“Both the club and Wales feel that now is the right time to address both issues.”
Jenkins made 20 appearances for Exeter last season and has made seven appearances for Wales this season.
“He’s a young man who has played a lot of rugby for the Chiefs and Wales so it’s important for him to get fit right now so he can get back into shape and get that rehab period to get back into shape and be ready to be the player we all know he is,” Baxter said. , external
Jenkins is listed alongside England centre Henry Slade as unfit for Exeter for the start of the new season after undergoing shoulder surgery.
Chiefs begin their Premiership season at home to Leicester Tigers on Saturday 21 September.
