Swedish officials say they have registered the first case of the more dangerous mpox variant outside Africa.
Sweden has confirmed its first case of mpox, a viral infection that spreads through close contact, and what it says is a more dangerous variant of the disease.
“We also received confirmation in the afternoon that there is one case in Sweden of the more severe type of mpox, called Clade I,” Health and Social Affairs Minister Jakob Forssmed told a news conference on Thursday.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared mpox a global public health emergency for the second time in two years, following the outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo that spread to other countries.
