Ahead of the documentary’s release Children’s StarDemi Lovato spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about her experience being in the spotlight and why she doesn’t want her children to go through the same thing.
Demi was only 15 years old Camp Rock It has catapulted her to global fame. She is currently making her directorial debut with a Hulu documentary about child stardom, which is set to premiere next month and will feature interviews with artists including Drew Barrymore, Raven-Symoné and JoJo Siwa.
In a lengthy interview, Demi looked back on her early days with Disney and the impact it had on her. As the singer became the family’s breadwinner, they recalled, “(My mom and stepdad) tried to lock me up, but I was a selfish child star, and I thought I was on top of the world. I was like, ‘But I’m making money,’ and how do you feel about that?”
So Demi thought about what she would say to her future daughter if she were to ask her to go into the industry. “I’d say, ‘Study music theory and get ready for when you turn 18, because it won’t happen until then. Not because I don’t believe in you or love you or want you to be happy, but because I want you to have a childhood. A childhood that I didn’t have,” she said.
“And let’s think about a backup plan. That’s one of the things I’ve been wanting to do,” they continued. “Sometimes it feels like it’s time for me to move on, but I’m in a weird place in my career because I still rely on music for income.”
Demi’s Upcoming Movie Roles To drag along She said it helped her rekindle her love of acting, beyond the potential for worsening her body image issues. She also said she was unlikely to tour again. “I always thought that if I made it in the industry, I would get the love I never got from my biological father. He was upset, and I think I always chased success because I knew I would be back in his sights and he would be proud of me,” she explained.
She added emotionally, “But now that I’ve dealt with my daddy issues, I don’t need the industry like I used to and I’m proud of how far I’ve come.”
