“I went fishing with my family on Sunday. It was absolutely amazing. It was my son’s idea. Just one of those workaholic days,” Schulman wrote in the caption. “We found an available boat (thanks, Captain Ben!) and caught all kinds of fish. Most were so cute I threw them back in, especially the puffer fish. It was magical. It was a day filled with the love and wonder that only a quiet day in nature with family can provide.”
“Monday wasn’t that day. Monday was the day I learned what ‘before the accident’ really meant. And Monday was the day I realized how lucky I was to have Sunday,” he continued. “It’s true what people say. Life can change in an instant.”

“I never picked my son up from school on my bike. In fact, in some ways, I’m glad I didn’t. I was alone in shock. Just me and the truck. And the pavement. I was alone and unconscious. And I was conscious,” he recalled. “I probably would have been OK (I wasn’t). I probably could have gone for a long run on Thursday (I couldn’t).”
“I broke my neck. C5 and C6 to be exact. It’s a stable fracture. I’m not paralyzed,” Schulman said. Doctors were initially worried whether they could do anything, but he explained that his body has healed and he expects to fully recover over time.
“It’s hard to feel sorry for myself when I hear doctors say so many people with similar injuries will never walk again,” he wrote. “I’m lucky to be here alive, standing here, hugging my family, and expecting a full recovery. And I’m really starting to understand the meaning of gratitude — for the big and small things before the accident, and for everything else that’s going on now.”
In his writing, Schulman delivered a message for those who do not spend enough time with the important people in their lives.
“We didn’t plan to go fishing last Sunday, and my instinct was to resist planning a day trip,” he said. “But looking back a week later, I’m really glad I did.”
