Vice President Kamala Harris is now officially the Democratic nominee for president in 2024.
The Democratic National Committee (DNC) made the announcement on Monday after completing a five-day online roll call for delegates who will attend the party’s national convention in Chicago in two weeks.
The nomination came hours before Harris announced her running mate. The vice president and her running mate will hold a rally in Philadelphia Tuesday evening, kicking off a fierce race in seven states.
Harris officially won the nomination on Monday, three days after securing a majority of the pledged delegate votes.
“I am proud to confirm that Vice President Harris has received a majority of the votes from all convention delegates and will be the Democratic nominee when voting closes on Monday,” DNC Chair Jamie Harrison said in a statement Friday.
“I am honored to be the presumptive Democratic nominee for president of the United States,” Harris said in a call with supporters Friday.
Harris’s nomination was never in doubt, as the vice president was the only candidate on the presidential ticket. But it marked a historic milestone in national history, as Harris became the first woman of color to win a major party’s national nomination.
While delegates’ formal nominating vote was conducted remotely, the DNC said it will conduct a ceremonial roll call at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on August 19.
Harris’s formal nomination came just two weeks and one day after President Biden announced he was suspending his 2024 re-election campaign against former President Trump, the Republican nominee.
Biden’s surprising news comes as pressure grows within the Democratic Party to step down after his disastrous performance in the first presidential debate with Trump last month. Biden, 81 years old His halting and stammering speech raised questions about his physical and mental ability to serve another four years in the White House.

But Biden’s immediate endorsement of Harris led to a surge of support for the vice president from Democratic governors, senators, representatives and other party leaders. Within 36 hours, Harris had secured the party’s nomination, garnering the verbal endorsement of a majority of the nearly 4,000 convention delegates.
As virtual voting for the presidential nomination draws to a close, DNC rules allow Harris to include her running mate’s name in the nomination.
According to the DNC, the convention chair will declare the candidate the party’s vice presidential nominee.
