Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) laughed off former President Trump’s choice of Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) as his running mate on Sunday.
“It was a great choice,” Pelosi said in an interview on CBS’ “Sunday Morning,” laughing when asked if the choice was a mistake.
Some Republicans have criticized the choice of Vance as the GOP nominee, arguing that as a freshman senator he does not have the credentials needed to win in November.
Democrats have criticized Vance’s staunch opposition to abortion access and his comments about families with children, calling him simply a “weird guy.”
Pelosi later described the senator as a “menace.”
Since being nominated at the Republican National Convention, Vance has been absent from the campaign trail and has struggled with low approval ratings.
The nominee has been criticized for doubling down on many of Trump’s policies, including some that are less popular, rather than his traditional strategy of seeking “balance” as a presidential candidate.
Vance confronted the criticism head on Sunday, dismissing any notion that Trump had made a mistake.
“I know a lot of people in the Republican establishment, and particularly on the far left, are not happy that Donald Trump picked me,” Vance said on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures.”
“I actually take their criticism as a badge of honor. Of course the media will attack the people they fear the most,” he continued. “The media will attack the people who can most effectively convey President Trump’s message to the broader electorate.”
