Angels — Aerosmith have announced that Steven Tyler will no longer be touring due to his voice being permanently damaged from a vocal cord injury he sustained last year.
The iconic band, home to hits like “Love in an Elevator” and “Livin’ on the Edge,” posted a statement on Friday announcing the cancellation of the remainder of their tour and providing an update on Tyler’s voice.
“He has worked tirelessly for months to regain his pre-injury voice. Despite having the best medical team at his side, we have seen him struggle. Sadly, it is clear that a full recovery from his vocal injury is impossible,” the statement said. “We have made the heartbreaking, difficult, but necessary decision as a band of brothers to retire from touring.”
Tyler announced in September that he had injured his vocal cords while performing on the Peace Out: The Farewell Tour. In an Instagram statement at the time, Tyler said the injury had caused bleeding, but that the band was hopeful of returning after postponing several shows.
Tyler’s soaring vocals have powered Aerosmith’s extensive catalog of hits since their formation in 1970, including “Dream On,” “Walk This Way,” and “Sweet Emotion.” They were about to embark on a 40-show farewell tour when Tyler suffered an injury.
“We’ve always wanted to blow your mind when we perform, and as you know, Steven’s voice is incomparable to any other instrument,” the band said in a statement to fans Friday.
“It’s been the honor of our lives that our music has become a part of you,” the band said. “In every club, on every big tour, and in every grand and private moment, you’ve given us a place on the soundtrack of your lives.”
